Sumber daya pertambangan yang potensial di Kabupaten Halmahera Utara sebagian besar telah teridentifikasi lokasi keberadaannya melalui penyelidikan dan eksplorasi secara bertahap yang dilakukan oleh para investor. Untuk bahan galian yang termasuk klasifikasi golongan B, pertambangan emas misalnya, investor PT. Nusa Halmahera Minerals mendapat izin eksploitasi (kontrak karya) pertambangan emas di wilayah Halmahera Utara (Kecamatan Kao), disamping itu pemerintah memberikan kesempatan kepada penduduk melalui wilayah pertambangan rakyat (WPR) dengan model pertambangan skala kecil yang dapat menyerap banyak tenaga kerja lokal. Selain tambang emas di Kecamatan Kao terdapat juga pertambangan emas di Kecamatan Loloda (Desa Dotia). Disamping itu Kecamatan Morotai memiliki potensi sumber daya energi yang diperkirakan sebesar 0.0072 juta barel dan energi gas bumi sebesar 0.018 Tscf, juga terdapat sumber daya energi panas bumi di Kecamatan Galela (Desa Mamuya).
